Our expedition

Two field collectors of documentation.

Docwell began the way most collections do: with one person refusing to throw a good answer away.

The collecting years.

Our founder spent four years as the only support engineer at a growing software company, answering the same twelve questions hundreds of times. Every answer lived in a sent-mail folder — brilliant, thorough, and effectively extinct. The turning point was a Sunday spent re-typing, word for word, an answer she knew she had written before. That evening she copied every sent answer into a single indexed notebook. Ticket volume fell by half within a quarter.

Learning to mount.

The notebook became a wiki, the wiki became a mess. Structure, it turned out, matters as much as content: a beetle unpinned is just a bug in a box. We studied how museums actually work — accession numbers, labels, version cards, the discipline of knowing exactly what you hold and where it hangs. Docwell's editor, search index and theme system are that discipline, compiled into software.

Opening the doors.

In April 2025 we opened Docwell to the public with the Specimen plan and a promise: no answer held hostage. Today the halls host thousands of knowledge bases — bakehouses, telescope makers, shipping firms — each exhibited under its own name, each exportable at any moment. A collection you cannot take home is a loan, not a collection. Ours is yours.

What the plaque says

Three values, bolted to the wall.

Preserve everything.

Drafts, revisions, dead ends. Version history means no good sentence is ever truly deleted — only retired to the archive.

Your docs are your collection.

You own 100% of your content. We are the cabinetmaker, never the collector. Export everything, any time, in open formats.

No dust, no lock-in.

Search analytics and reader votes keep articles honest. And if you leave, your content leaves with you — doors unlocked, no exit fee.
